About The Surgeon

Dr. Divakar Bhat, popularly known in the medical fraternity as 'Beating Heart Surgeon' working as senior consultant cardio-thoracic and vascular surgeon in Aster RV Hospital J.P.Nagar, Bangalore from April 2022. Earlier he has worked as chief cardio-thoracic and vascular surgeon for more than a 16 years at Mallya Hospital located in the Heart of the Bangalore City. He is having a vast experience of performing more than 6000 Cardiac surgeries and having presented more than 10 scientific papers in national and international forums, Dr.Bhat believes surgery is only 1/4th in the process of healing, but understanding & listening to patients is rather more important.

Dr.Divakar Bhat had humble beginnings at a remote village near Sirsi, Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka State where he did his schooling. He came to Mysore Marimallapa's college for his pre university course. After M.B.B.S degree from K.M.C Hubli, he acquired M.S in General surgery from Govt Medical College, Mysore and M.Ch from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He was awarded a fellowship in Heart Lung Transplant surgery from St.Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.

Dr. Bhat began his career in 1992 as a lecturer in Pathology at Pravarava Medical College and later joined Batra Hospital, New Delhi as a Senior Resident in Oncosurgery. Subsequently, he moved to "Escorts Heart Institute" Delhi, where he developed keen interest in Cardiac surgery.

He had worked as cardio-thoracic surgeon in Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh. Back to South India, he took up as cardiac Surgeon at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Heart centre, Bangalore. It was in his assignment at St' Vincent's hospital Sydney, that he has been awarded Fellowship in Heart Lung Transplant surgery. Presently, he is working as Chief Cardio-thoracic Surgeon in Mallya Hospital, Bangalore. Dr. Divakar Bhat is perhaps the youngest cardiac surgeon to occupy this challenging post among the city Hospitals.

Between 1992 & 2009 he has presented various papers at the National and International level and has also submitted two dissertations, one on 'acute appendicitis' for the award of MS General Surgery, & 'analysis of surgical results of ASD-Review of 25Yrs' for the award of Mch Cardiac surgery. He has also published over five articles on various topics in his field.

At Mallya hospital, Dr. Bhat has produced excellent results at par with international standards. At his centre every heart patient gets the deserving operation irrespective of his or her financial status. For those who cannot afford open-heart operation, he has gone one step ahead in shouldering the responsibility towards raising the required funds through various philanthropist organizations.

He is well known for his "Beating heart surgery" technique where in heart (engine) is repaired without stopping, thus helping the patient to recover very fast from major operation. Valve replacement, pediatric heart operations & lung surgeries are done with high success rate in his hands. By now he has performed more than 2800 heart operations independently, involved in more than 4300 operations as assistant surgeon, and got actively involved in around 100 heart lung transplants when he was in Sydney.

More than a Surgeon, he is known for his kind and considerate attitude towards his patients. Every patient who visits him goes out of the hospital with a positive smile cherishing the sweet stay at the Hospital. Infact this is what Dr.Bhat aims to achieve and he believes that the personal touch has a lot to do in the recovery process.

On 23rd Sep 2007 Prajnavardhini Trust felicitated him for his untiring work for humanity.

On 30th sep 2007, World Heart Day he was awarded Vox Populi cardiac surgeon award for the year 2006-2007 by People Health at Bangalore.

6th December 2007, 'Sharat Sambhram' a cultural festival organized by Uttara Kannada District. Dr.Divakar Bhat was felicitated for his enormous achievements in the field of cardio-thoracic surgery, from Uttara Kannada.

On 18th may 2008; 'Sun feast marathon' was held at Bangalore. In the open 10K run Dr.Divakar Bhat with bib number 2723,finished the race with timing of 01:03:54sec.

On 18th July 2008, Shri Madjagadguru Shankaracharya, Shri Sonda Swarnavalli Mahasanstana felicitated Dr.Divakar for his hearty work to mankind and awarded him "Sahrudaya Hrudayajna".
